The Thing You Didn't Know About

This Skinny Saturday I want to talk about our metabolism.

The only way to effectively lose weight and KEEP it off is to get your metabolism up and running as fast as it can. That means starving yourself and depriving your body of food will only slow down your metabolism, instead of losing weight. Anyway, that's a whole different topic.

I recently found out about an oil that helps boosts your metabolism. MCT Oil. Medium Chain Triglycerides, MCT for short, are made up of medium-chain fatty acids.

Due to the reduced chain length, MCTs are absorbed and then metabolized very rapidly.

They are very efficiently converted into fuel for immediate use, instead of being stored as fat. They are used as energy much faster than glucose and have over twice the calories per gram, making them an excellent energy source during intense exercise.

What are the benefits of MCT oil?

MCTs are very easy for the body to break down and use as energy. Think of long chain fats as being like a whole piece of fruit and MCTs as being like a smoothie. If you eat the whole fruit, you have to put in a lot of effort chewing, but the smoothie you can just slurp right up almost without noticing. In your digestive system, MCTs are a little bit like that smoothie.

You might think from this that MCTs would promote weight gain but in fact, this isn’t true. MCTs don’t cause instant weight gain, and in fact they even be a benefit for weight loss.

A study, for example, found that, over a 12-week period, subjects who got MCT oil lost about 2 pounds more than controls.

The bottom line: MCTs won’t necessarily help you burn a crazy amount of extra calories every day, but they may be beneficial to weight loss because they help in restoring normal metabolic function.

How to take it?
I take a tablespoon every morning in my protein shake. It also helps with digestion! :)
Where to buy it?
Some Whole Foods sell it, Amazon, and other vitamin stores and pharmacies  A bottle is usually round $25ish.

Side Effects
Be carefully not to over do it. Too much of MCT oil can cause nausea, dizziness, irritability, vomiting, stomach discomfort, and other side effects. As always, consult your doctor before taking this and use everything in moderation.
